What is Arnica Montana

Arnica is an herb that homeopathic healers have kept on hand for centuries.

Arnica montana, is more commonly known as arnica. It’s a perennial, aromatic, yellow-flowered herb native to mountainous regions of Europe and Siberia. You can also find it growing wild in North America.

The name Arnica Montana comes from the Greek word arni, meaning “lamb,” and the Latin word herba, meaning “grass” or “plant.” The plant has soft, velvety leaves that are used in many topical pain-relieving creams, ointments, and salves.

Let’s dive into how you can experience arnica montana’s healing properties.

#1.  Arnica Montana Has Been a Trusted Homeopathic Remedy for Over 400 Years.

Indigenous Americans and Europeans have known it for centuries. Some of nature’s best remedies may grow closer than you’d think!

Our ancestors were wise to take note of the medicinal properties of arnica. Commonly known by names like wolf’s bane, leopard’s bane, or mountain tobacco arnica montana is an essential ingredient for a homeopathic healer’s shelf.

Many products containing arnica are sold commercially. These salves, gels, and creams claim to relieve muscle soreness, pain, and many skin problems.

You’ve probably seen it at the pharmacy near all the tubes of anti-inflammatory creams. Some of these products even hide the word “arnica” in their name. You may even have a jarful lurking in the back of your medicine cabinet.

That’s because the secret sauce contained in commercial and homeopathic topicals – responsible for relieving your pain is arnica oil.

#2. Arnica May Help Relieve the Pain and Inflammation Associated With Arthritis and Sports-Related Injuries.

Arnica essential oil is applied topically —  so it goes to work fast.

Studies show that the anti-inflammatory properties found in arnica may reduce swelling around inflamed joints — allowing your body to move freely and with less pain.

Arnica increases circulation. With extra blood traveling to your pain points, your muscles warm like a heating pad to gently alleviate pain.

Whether you struggle with…

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Or psoriatic arthritis

…when your pain is flaring up, you need relief fast.

In fact, one study revealed that patients taking ibuprofen for osteoarthritis hand pain experienced similar pain relief as those applying arnica essential oil topically to their hands(*1)

Many running feet are pictured at the starting line of a marathon on a city street.

In another study, athletes reported that arnica oil applied to the skin dramatically reduced their post-workout discomfort.

Surprisingly, runners who applied arnica several times a day reported continued pain relief for up to 72 hours(*2).

#3. Arnica Aids in Healing and Improving Many Skin Conditions.

Arnica oil increases blood flow to the affected area, reducing inflammation and speeding healing time for many skin conditions.

You’ll notice the discoloration of your bruised skin fades faster with arnica montana. Simply apply diluted arnica oil to the affected area as often as needed to your bruised, swollen, and unbroken skin.

It’s naturally anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, and anti-fungal — making it a natural solution to soothe irritated skin.

  • Bug bites are soothed.
  • Rashes start to vanish.
  • Acne dramatically improves.
  • Dandruff stops itching.
  • Eczema begins to heal.

You’ll definitely want to add this oil to your ouch pouch. 🤕

Arnica Montana essential oil helps improve many minor skin irritations.

Even surgeons know the power of arnica. Post-operative instructions often suggest using an arnica-based product to promote healing.

Arnica is a two-for-one special — it works to reduce post-operative pain and diminish the appearance of scars at the same time.

Can You Grow Arnica to Use Medicinally?

Arnica essential oil is not the same as arnica-infused oil. These pretty flowers bloom across North America and Europe. They self-seed and are easy to grow.

While they may be an easy addition to your garden, transforming arnica blossoms into essential oil is a little more complicated than just picking flowers.

You can even harvest those blossoms, prepare them, and add them to your favorite carrier oil. After resting in a dark cabinet for six weeks, you’ll only have a beautiful, arnica-infused oil.

Sunflower

There’s nothing wrong with arnica-infused oils. They simply contain a small amount of arnica essential oil diluted with a neutral carrier oil — such as sunflower or sweet almond oil.

However, the extracted oil harvested from arnica montana blossoms is far more potent than any homemade arnica-blossom infusion.

So to experience substantial relief from arnica, you’ll need a method of extraction more potent than a pretty jar of infused flower petals.
